The Secret History by Donna Tartt

I honestly don’t understand the hype with this book.

For me it was overhyped, filled with details and moments that just disconnected me completely from the plot. I grew bothered at some parts and had to force myself to finish.

The characters are complex but mostly whiny, contradictory and very much lost in life, something that doesn’t change throughout the book. They don’t grow up, they don’t learn anything and they only care for themselves. Richard was the only character I could remotely understand and he had moments I just wanted to shake him.

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but it was honestly one of the most painful reads I had this year. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it surely wasn’t this.
